Instead of thinking that you must invent a new industry out of scratch like many think Zuckerberg or Carnegie did, think about how you can reinvent an industry....

According to data released last week by Black Hat USA, cyber security professionals do not feel confident that their organizations are prepared for attacks on their infrastructure. Their third annual attendee survey, Portrait of an Imminent Cyberthreat, was released publicly last week in advance of this month’s Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas. In a survey that included 580 respondents and security professionals of varied experience levels and positions, two-thirds of respondents think it’s likely that their own organizations will have to respond to major security breach within the next 12 months, and the majority of them do not believe they possess the staff or the budget to meet these threats....

According to Tech Wildcatters, this class was particularly tough to select because they got an unprecedented amount of applications from their relationships with influencers in startup hubs the world over. Participants in this class include companies from the UK, Germany, Moscow, Florida, Washington, Fort Worth, Denver, and of course Dallas. All told there are 15 companies currently going through the program, each of whom has been given $25,000 in exchange for 8 percent equity in their company....

If you didn’t know, sleep is heavily reliant on temperature. Even a single degree can completely change the kind of night you have. And on a global scale, increasing temperatures are effecting the way people sleep, according to a recent study. By bringing together survey data from more than 750,000 respondents between 2002 and 2011, combined with nighttime temperature data, researchers were able to discern that there was in fact a correlation between the increased number of sleepless nights around the world and the warming temperatures in the last few decades....

A new study shows that an increasing number of the population believes robots are going to take their jobs. In fact, 65 percent believe that over the next 50 years, robots will occupy many jobs currently held by humans. While sci-fi movies and Apple commercials might have a part in cultivating these feelings, it’s hard to keep from noticing the signs. From self checkout aisles in grocery stories to drones delivering packages, more jobs than ever are being outsourced to robots....

The event, held at ThinkTank Biddeford, was the culmination of a series of monthly events that began in November and offered a venue for startup founders to pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges. Surge Hydro, based in Belfast, secured a spot in the final competition in February when it won the fourth monthly Pitch York County event, along with $750. The District of Columbia has the largest amount of remote workers, with a full 48.3% of its workforce operating from the comfort of their own homes. Follow-up states include Washington, Maryland, Colorado, and Massachusetts, all of which reported around 24% working remotely. It’s the highest number since the first Bureau launched its American Community Survey (ACS) back in 2005, and a clear sign that remote work will remain in the country’s future....

According to SweetLabs, the response to Pokki since launch has been very positive, with a grassroots community of developers growing around the platform. Engagement with Pokki apps has also been an upward trend, according to the team. For example, the Twitter app is, on average, opened by a user 17 times a day. This is more activity than Twitter.com itself. This just illustrates that desktop apps can be extremely sticky and drive engagement....
