Access to the internet is widely considered a human right around the world. Still, many censorship-prone countries take to using access to the internet as a political tool that can prevent meaningful communication between those fighting against oppression. Iran has done just that, cutting internet to its 80 million residents during mounting protests of the country’s morality police and their treatment of women who refuse to wear hijabs. That’s a highest number of tech layoffs and dismissals across the last two decades, and it handily beats the early pandemic spike in 2020. Layoffs.fyi found a total of over 70,000 tech job losses between March 2020 and December 2020, followed by a dip to just around 15,000 jobs cut across all of 2021.
